50 School Shootings In Under Two Years Says Something

Jesus once said:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)

There’s a lot of talk about how we are in a post-Christian America. And depending on where you live, that’s true to varying degrees. Regardless of the extent, I do think that is a true statement. We are still more Christian than most other nations, but not nearly as Christian as we once were.

There has been a lot of talk about how oppressive Christianity has been for so long in our country. And so much of what’s going on now is supposed to be the response of those who have claimed to be oppressed by our morals and need to get out from underneath them so they experience true freedom, etc.

So, now we’re living in this new age where there are fewer moral restrictions, and our society is constantly on the prowl to fight against “those people” (who usually just happen to be christian) who restrict the true freedoms Americans are entitled to such as LGBT issues, Abortion, etc.

It would seem that the moral foundation of the day is that there are no morals. Even as soon as thirty years ago, that was not the case. I am 34 years old, and I remember a completely different morality that governed our society. Even for those who were not Christian, there was still a very clear understanding of right and wrong.

Today, in the Northwest, there was another school shooting. To my tally that’s three school shootings in three weeks. I don’t remember another time in my life where that has been the case. According to this Washington Post article, there have been 44 school shootings since the awful day of the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012. That’s 44 in less than two years. That’s a number I can’t even comprehend. And the article was written February 13, so it doesn’t include the 3 in the last three weeks, and maybe others.

(It turns out the number is much higher than I had originally thought, according to this CBS evening news report by Bob Orr. http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/why-have-active-shooter-incidents-spiked-in-united-states/)

Many argue that gun control is what’s needed. While I tend not to get into arguments pertaining to this issue, I don’t see that as the problem.

What then, is going on?

To me, there is no question about the cause of our current crisis. The cause is we have built our moral foundation on the shifting sands of relative truth. And as we get further and further away from the morals that used to guide and govern our conscious and subconscious thoughts, we should expect to see a greater unraveling of moral behavior as the norm. Like the threads of a rope, snapping one by one, our grasp on reality is slipping away.

Screen Shot 2014-06-10 at 11.25.46 AMOr perhaps a better metaphor is that of a house build on the sand. Like these houses being washed out to sea on the coast of Hawaii, the waves of the depravity of man and our natural sinful state are not withstand-able. We live in a fallen world, and it is only by the grace of Jesus that we can stand amid the turmoil of wrong and evil actions. When you pull the foundation out from underneath a building, it collapses. When you pull the moral foundation out from under a society, at the very least there will be a great period strain and turmoil – if not complete collapse.

You see, there are the written rules that govern the country. But, then there are also all the unwritten rules that govern our society. We cannot account for the amount of governance that takes placed based on unwritten codes of conduct. With the rate of erosion of those unwritten rules and the slower and slower rate of government to make up for and account for those rules, there are bound to be times when we are no longer governed by our conscience and are yet to be governed by law.

For every decision we make to walk away from the moral underpinnings on which our entire existence is founded, a little more of our house washes out to sea.

What’s the Solution?

The solution is not more laws, more government, bigger police budget and regulations of varying degrees, and it’s certainly not religious oppression that is needed. The solution is what Jesus called us to do. We are to be his witnesses to the world. We are to live our lives in such a way that the world around us takes note. Not the whole world, just the people in our little corner of it. We have seen the difference Christ has made in our own lives – so our role is to give an account of (or testimony, like a witness on the stand) that difference. We give an account of the difference Christ has made in the lives of our friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. We are to give a reason for the hope that we have – the very foundation for the existence of this forum. That’s the solution.

The solution is sharing more of Christ with the world around us. The more of Christ we share with our world, the more the foundation of our world will once again be built on the rock that never fails.

And I just happen to be crazy enough to believe that our best days can still be ahead of us. We may no longer be a Christian nation, but that does not mean we cannot be a Christian people. In fact, I think we have a greater chance at the present moment to become a truer Christian nation than we were ever before. Because, when people choose to follow Christ of their own accord, and experience Him first hand, not vicariously through their grandparents, principals or mayors, it changes everything.

And that’s exactly what we need. We need Jesus to change everything.

It Doesn’t Really Matter What You Think #truthexists

truth

When you boil it all down until one thing is left, what do you have?

Forgive my oversimplification, and don’t misinterpret what I’m saying. I’m neither saying that truth is more important than God or that truth is the only thing to consider in life.

But, when you boil it all down, what’s left? The simple answer is truth.

Unfortunately, we’ve given far too much credit to personal opinion in modern life. We’ve emboldened people by saying that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. As has been said, many times, we are all entitled to our own opinion, but we are also entitled to be wrong.

And that’s the foundation we need to work from. Somehow, we have to get people to the foundation of right and wrong. When this foundation doesn’t exist, we do find ourselves in the position we have arrived at today. When you walk away from truth, you walk away from everything that holds everything together.

Should we spend our time and energy arguing over the hot-button topics of the day? Perhaps. But, what good is it to argue on any topic if the destination is “well, that’s just what’s true for you”? There is no point. It’s a waste of everyone’s time and breath if we try to argue apart from absolute truth.

Apply this to any topic you can think of. Imagine yourself getting in a heated debate with someone over the topic of the day, whatever that might be. Feel the tension rise in the room and the pressure rise your blood stream. Go through the whole thing from beginning to end. How do you feel, when you end the argument with “well, that’s just what’s true for you?”

Our efforts must be spent in bringing people back to the understanding that there is a truth. And we just happen to know what it is.

That’s why it doesn’t really matter what you think. What really matters is the truth.

The Christian Forum Podcast – Episode 015 – Ratio Christi – Part 1

College campuses are becoming battlegrounds for atheistic attacks on young Christians. Secular professors and peers are organizing to disabuse student Christians of their belief in God, Jesus, Creation and all things Biblical. Sadly, these attacks are working against those who cannot defend their faith. Today on the forum we’ll hear from the president of Ratio Christi, Rick Schenker, an organization equipping college age Christians with the information necessary to not only defend their faith, but bring those on the offense to understand God’s truths through logic. Joining us today on our podcast are officers in the Ohio University chapter of Ratio Christi, Dave Scmitt and Sara Welch, our forum leader is Jim Lindner.

The Sound of Abortion

I know there are many who are still very passionate about the issue of life and prevention of abortion. However, it’s unfortunate that the issue seems to have lost a lot of steam. Just because it doesn’t seem to be as high profile right now, doesn’t mean it’s not important.

This video should help remind us all of just how many lives have been lost as a result of this issue.
